The BellyMap and Stream Skipping
A couple people have emailed some questions, enough that there are probably more people with the same questions:
1) Q: Why is my dot on the BellyMap missing/misplaced? A: The BellyMap makes use of a free Geo IP database from MaxMind which is supposed to provide Lat/Long coordinates for any given IP address. We take the list of current listeners from the server and query the database, build a list of coordinates and plot them with Google Maps. The MaxMind database appears to be either wildly inaccurate for some IPs and for the ones it just doesn't know about, plots them in the middle of Kansas. The old BellyMap used a different database which in retrospect was far more accurate, but a lot more cumbersome to use. We may switch back to this, but it's not a high priority.
2) Q: My stream is skipping badly, what can I do? A: You can try using a different player, but the real problem likely is with the internet itself and there may be nothing you can do about it. Streaming audio requires a relatively good path between the server and the client. The server is California, US - the further you are from there, the more likely that there is some internet provider along the way that's not doing a terrific job of routing your packets. The routing that takes place in getting packets from point A to point B changes all the time, so you may get a good connection one day and a bad connection another day. The closer the slow connection is to you, the more likely that you're going to have problems.
Hope that helps!
